  Zoning

A zoning permit is required for all improvements except installation of siding; roof shingles; replacement doors and windows; and work inside a structure. The permit must be obtained before work is started on the project.

When applying for a permit you need (as a minimum) to bring in the following items. You may be required to provide additional information depending on the scope of your project. Please call the Department before you come in to apply to see if you will need to bring additional information.

1.
Detailed sketch of the improvement showing measurements of the improvement and distances from the property
2.
Legal description of the property. The easiest places to find this information is on your deed or your property tax slip.
3.
Name and address of the contractor.
4.
Estimated cost of the improvement.
Board of Zoning Appeals. All applications for hearing before the Board are processed through the Engineering Department and questions may be directed to Judy Cordle at (740) 393-2033.

Utility Permits - Water and Wastewater Taps
A tapping permit is required for any new connection to the main lines. The fee for these permits are subject to change without notice and we recommend that you call and check the fee before you come in to apply for a permit.

When applying for a permit you will need the name and address of the contractor. In some area abutting the City you will need to bring written permission from either the Knox County Commissioners or the Clinton Township Trustees before a permit can be issued.

  Street Opening Permit
A street opening permit is required any time work is performed in the public right of way. The cost for the permit is a $50.00 application fee and a minimum deposit of $1,000.00. The deposit is refundable provided that the work is completed in accordance with the City's specifications.

The permit requires that you submit any drawings for the proposed work as well as the name and address of the contractor performing the work.

  Stormwater Management Permit
A stormwater management permit is required for any activities that displace more than 20,000 square feet of earth. Please contact the Department, as detailed information is required for this permit application.
